IULM research group on Periodicals Studies
IuPS, the IULM Research Group on Periodical Studies, aims to analyze Italian and foreign newspapers and magazines, of the past and of the present, from a transmedia perspective. It is composed by researchers from the department of Communication, Arts and Media "Giampaolo Fabris" and the department of Humanities. Over the years, periodical scholars from other institutions, both Italian and foreign ones, have joined it.
IuPS actively collaborates with ESPRit (European Society for Periodical Research).

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
2016-2018 |
In 2016-2018, a first project was developed, which led to the organization of the Sixth annual international conference of ESPRit Conflict in the Periodical Press (held at IULM University, Milan, on 28-30 June 2017), the publication of a special issue of JEPS (Journal of European Periodical Studies) edited by Paolo Giovannetti, Andrea Chiurato, and Mara Logaldo, and the volume Periodici del novecento e del duemila tra le avanguardie e il postmoderno, edited by Giovannetti and published in 2018. |
2018-2022 |
In the years 2018-2020 a second project was developed, focusing on the review form. The outcomes of this project were a one-day workshop on reviewing practices (Milan, May 2019), the first international conference dedicated to the genre of the review, held online on June 3-5, 2020, and the volume on the practice of reviewing in modern and contemporary publishing Leggere per scegliere, edited by Andrea Chiurato (2020). |
2022-onwards |
Since 2022, a third project has seen the continuation of the research on periodicals, focusing on the birth and establishment of the illustrated magazine format, which became popular in Italy in the late 1930s, during the fascist regime. The analysis has centred on the magazine Tempo in relation to other weeklies and periodical publications experimenting with similar techniques during the same period. A first workshop is planned for November 22, 2022, and an international conference will be organized in 2023. |
