Matteo Riva is a journalist and information designer specializing in map representation.
He graduated in Communication Design from the Polytechnic University of Milan with a thesis on Olivetti industrial films (2010), audiovisual documents ranging from product narratives to architecture and the city.
Since 2020, he has been involved in editorial cartographic activities for the international magazine Monocle, specifically creating tourist maps for the guides “The Monocle Handbook of Spain” (2023), “The Monocle Handbook of Portugal” (2022), “The Monocle Book of the Nordics” (2022), and “The Monocle Book of Italy” (2021).
In 2020, he illustrated the infographics for the book “The Flavor Equation” by chef influencer Nik Sharma, published by Chronicle Books. A second book with the same publisher is expected in October 2023.
Since 2016, he has been a regular collaborator with La Repubblica, where he creates infographics.
In 2020, he worked on the exhibition “Ma noi ricostruiremo, La Milano bombardata del 1943 nell’Archivio Publifoto Intesa Sanpaolo” at the Gallerie d’Italia (curated by Mario Calabresi, October 2020). In the same exhibition, he reproduced a map (later made interactive) of the city of Milan, depicting the post-war state of destroyed and damaged buildings.
In 2019, he published a “fantastic” map of the Milanese neighborhood “Nolo” in the December issue of Domus, which was the main theme of the issue. Other representation projects, such as maps and infographics dedicated to the city, have appeared in various national and international newspapers (La Repubblica, Corriere della Sera, Monocle, Panorama, Wired) and in some tourist publications/guides (such as the tourist guide “Milano Confidential” by Alessia Algani, Bur Rizzoli, Milan 2015).
Another notable territorial narrative project of his was reproduced at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam (“Cities in a click,” Milan Map for Schiphol Amsterdam Airport, a project by ING direct + Lonely Planet, 2015). Finally, in 2018, he curated the infographics for the exhibition “Un mondo che funziona a gas” (Leonardo Da Vinci Science and Technology Museum, Milan, 2018).
He is a journalist and art director for VITA magazine, which focuses entirely on the Third Sector and anthropological-social interests. He regularly collaborates with numerous companies (Enel, European Foundation Centre, Federlegno, Cariplo Foundation, ING Direct, Intesa Sanpaolo, Luxottica, Pepsi, Republic of San Marino, Slow Food Editore, Snam, Tim, Zalando) and studios (77Agency, Accurat, CBA design, Interbrand, iMille, Planet B, Studio Patricia Urquiola, Studio Pitis, Superhumans, TBWA, Weber Shandwick, Wunderman, YAM112003).
As a lecturer, since 2021, he has been a contract professor at the Polytechnic University of Turin for the course “Communicating Complexity,” an educational activity with a specific focus on information design. The course is attended by students from both the design and Cinema and Media Engineering faculties.
In 2023, he held a workshop for Strategic Communication students at IULM.
Also in 2021, he served as an assistant for Elena Granata’s Urban Planning course at the Polytechnic University of Milan (teaching support).
From 2017 to 2020, he taught information design and illustration at the IED (European Institute of Design) in Turin. Specifically, for the illustration course, he worked with students on the design of illustrated city maps.
In 2020, he conducted a workshop on information design for the Journalism Master’s program at LUMSA (Libera Università Maria Santissima Assunta) in Rome. As a guest professional at seminars, he has been invited to various universities, such as NABA (New Academy of Fine Arts) in Milan (course on graphic design, Temporin, 2020), and the School of Comics in Padua.
