Alberto Garutti, artist and teacher, teaches at the IUAV in Venice, Faculty of Design and Arts and at the Faculty of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano. Until 2013 he held the Chair of Painting at the Brera Academy of Milan.
Invited to major international events, such as the Venice Biennale in 1990, the Istanbul Biennale in 2001 and the Memory Marathon at the Serpentine Gallery in London in 2012, he is often called upon to create public works for cities and museums: in Ghent, Belgium for the Museum S.M.A.K. on the occasion of the exhibition "Over the Edges" (2000), in Herford for the MARTa Museum (2003), in 2002 in Kanazawa, Japan, in collaboration with the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, in Moscow in 2011 for the Moscow Museum of Modern Art in the context of the exhibition "Impossible Community" and in Milan in the Porta Nuova district commissioned by Hines Italia. in 2012
He creates permanent works able to trigger relations and connections between public and private institutions and the social fabric of the city. The cases of Bergamo and Bolzano (in collaboration with Museion), as well as Trivero with the work conceived for the Zegna Foundation (2009), Cagliari for the Tiscali headquarters in 2003 and the work Tutti i passi installed in the spaces of Malpensa Airport and Cadorna Station in Milan and in Piazza S.M. Novella in Florence are oriented in this direction.
Garutti has been the protagonist of various personal exhibitions in private spaces, and has exhibited in many galleries in Italy and abroad, including the Paul Maenz Gallery in Cologne, the Minini Gallery in Brescia, the Magazzino d'Arte Moderna in Rome, Studio Guenzani, the Marconi Gallery in Milan, the Buchmann Galerie in Lugano and Berlin, and the Massimo de Carlo Gallery in Milan. Alberto Garutti has explored the relationship between art, city and landscape in numerous collective exhibitions in public spaces: significant in this sense are the cases of "Arte all'Arte" editions 2000 and 2005 and "Luna Park" at Villa Manin, Codroipo (2005) curated by Francesco Bonami.
In 2008 he participated in the exhibition "ITALICS, Italian Art between Tradition and Revolution 1968-2008" at Palazzo Grassi in Venice and then in Chicago, at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Initially presented at the Fondazione Remotti in Camogli, his work Temporali was installed at the MAXXI Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI secolo in Rome in 2009, part of the exhibition cycle "Dialoghi con la città", at the Triennale in Milan (2015) at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin in 2010, at the Vitra Design Museum (2013), at Palazzo Cusani in the exhibition I'll Be There Forever (2015) and at the exhibition Intuition at Palazzo Fortuny, a collateral event of the Venice Biennale 2017.
He was a member of the jury for the Furla Art Award and president of the Italian jury for the latest edition of the Italian Studio Program at the MoMA PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York. In 2009 he won the Terna Prize 02 and the Culture Prize of the city of Ghent in Belgium. The work for the Chorale Vincenzo Bellini (2000) was selected in 2011 by Creative Time, New York among the 100 public projects of the exhibition "Living as Form: Socially Engaged Art from 1991-2011". In 2012, on the occasion of the solo exhibition at the Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea in Milan, curated by Paola Nicolin and Hans Ulrich Obrist, the book "Alberto Garutti, caption/caption", published by Walther König and Mousse Publishing, was published.
In 2014 he took part in the group exhibition Soleil Politique, curated by Pierre Bal-Blanc at Museion in Bolzano. In 2015, in the Cinquecento Veneziano room at the Pinacoteca in Milan, one of his works was installed for the Brera in Contemporaneo exhibition.
During 2017 he exhibited at the Hangar Bicocca in Milan, in the neo-Gothic Cathedral of Ostend and at the Palazzo del Quirinale in Rome. In addition, at the Kestnergesellschaft Museum in Hanover, a special project was presented on the occasion of the centenary of the daily Hannoversche Allgemeine. Also in 2017 Alberto Garutti won the international competition for The Three Thresholds of Ca' Corniani organized by Assicurazioni Generali - Genagricola S.p.A., which provides for the creation of three permanent public works near Caorle (Ve). In 2018 on behalf of the Ministry of Culture will create a permanent work for Palazzo Ardinghelli in L'Aquila, curated by the Maxxi Museum in Rome.
