Degree course in Mediation, Interpreting and Intercultural Communication

The Bachelor’s degree in Mediation, Interpreting and Intercultural Communication involves the study of at least two European languages, chosen from French, Spanish and German, in addition to English. For each language, students develop skills in translation, mediation and interpreting.

The programme offers three specialised tracks:

• Interpreting and Translation Techniques. This track focuses on advanced interpreting skills, including simultaneous interpreting, as well as innovative translation practices, alongside training in the digital and AI-based tools required for the profession.
• Emerging Languages and Intercultural Competencies. Designed to prepare students to operate effectively in multicultural contexts as global citizens, this track includes the study of a third language, chosen from Arabic, Chinese or Russian. 
• Linguistic Mediation for Marketing and Business. This track combines language studies with an understanding of corporate and business environments, integrating courses in economics, marketing and corporate communication.

Students choose their preferred curriculum in the second year of the programme, based on their professional goals.

Language teaching at IULM is strongly experiential and includes a total of 320 hours of workshop-based classes. These workshops are held in small groups of no more than 25 students, fostering continuous and effective interaction between lecturers and students. IULM has been active in language education since 1968 and draws on decades of experience, adopting a participatory, innovative and highly effective teaching approach. The teaching staff is largely composed of native-speaker instructors, ensuring a high standard of language instruction.

The overall aim of the degree programme is to prepare students for careers as language and intercultural mediators by equipping them with the skills that are now essential to enter today’s global and interconnected job market.

The programme aims to provide:

• a strong, active command of at least two foreign languages, along with greater awareness of the expressive potential of Italian;
• a solid grounding in language mediation, in line with current technologies, digital tools, and emerging professional fields;
• a thorough preparation in communication and intercultural processes;
• a sound knowledge of the cultures associated with the languages studied, as well as of international relations.

Students study two foreign languages: English is compulsory, while the second language can be chosen from French, Spanish, or German. Those who choose the “Emerging Languages and Multicultural Competences” course will study a third language, selected from Arabic, Chinese, or Russian. Language classes are workshop-based and taught in small groups of up to 25 students, adopting a participatory, innovative, and effective approach to language learning.
