Special screening of the film Il pianto degli eroi at IULM
On April 14, at 5 p.m., IULM hosts a screening of Bruno Bigoni and Francesca Lolli's film "Il Pianto degli Eroi. L'Iliade e Le Troiane nel carcere di Bollate". Hosts will be some of the inmates involved in the project, the Director of the Milan Bollate Prison, the Guarantor of Prisoners' Rights, and representatives of the cooperative active within the prison. Elio De Capitani, Artistic Director of the Elfo Puccini Theater, will also speak.
On April 14 at 5 p.m. in Sala dei 146, IULM University will host the screening of the film "Il Pianto degli Eroi. L'Iliade e Le Troiane nel carcere di Bollate," a work made inside the Milan Bollate Prison, which tells the stories and emotions of inmates through the language of cinema.
The event will be opened by an institutional greeting from the Rector, Prof. Valentina Garavaglia. The screening will be attended by some of the inmates involved in the project, the Director of the Milan Bollate Prison, the Guarantor of Prisoners' Rights, and representatives of the cooperative active within the prison. Also speaking will be Elio De Capitani, Artistic Director of the Elfo Puccini Theater, who will participate in the debate that will follow the screening.
The film, which was already presented last November at the Filmaker film festival, offers a profound reflection on prison reality and the power of theater and cinema as tools of expression and redemption. "Il Pianto degli Eroi" was born from the collaboration between directors Bruno Bigoni (IULM professor) and Francesca Lolli within IULM University, involving students from the master's course in Television, Cinema and New Media and a group of inmates from Bollate prison. The project, funded by IULM University and produced by IULM Movie Lab, saw the active participation of Bollate Prison management, Cooperativa Sociale Articolo 3 and the Ministry of Justice - Department of Prison Administration. Filming took place in July 2023, followed by an editing and post-production phase completed in the summer of 2024.
IULM University has been involved in cultural and educational projects in the Milan Bollate Prison for many years. Back in 2003 it co-produced the film Riccardo, also directed by Bruno Bigoni and shot inside the prison, involving inmates, officers and students under the supervision of Gianni Canova. In 2015 he took part in the "In Living Memory" project, offering its students the opportunity to participate in video theater workshops in Bollate and organizing a conference curated by lecturer Valentina Garavaglia. In 2017, he launched the "Nuovo Carcere Galeotto" research project, which explores theater as a tool for reeducation and social inclusion, involving inmates and students in performance experiences.
