The Voice / The Voices of Women, from classics to contemporaries
A conference and a theatrical performance on November 27
LA VOCE / LE VOCI DELLE DONNE, DAI CLASSICI AI CONTEMPORANEI
The project focuses on the individual and/or collective voice of women, analyzing the various female voices that have alternated and overlapped from the classical world to the present, either in the form of direct testimony or through male mediation.
The path, diachronic and cross-cultural, takes its start from ancient, Greek and Roman society, where women often took on the role of destabilizers of the male order: what is interesting is the direct taking of their words against the will of men (husbands, brothers, fathers...) who would often like to reduce them to silence. It is precisely the expressive power unleashed by such figures that makes it possible to read in the watermark the possibility of another order than the typically masculine one.
The lively transmigration of female characters from ancient texts to the contemporary scene, moreover, makes it possible to find in women's voices a useful heuristic for understanding the conflicting dynamics of the present that see in the female role and related issues the pivot for the elaboration of a new ethics of sexual difference and a new society that is not necessarily androcentric.
The International Conference, the result of a research project sponsored by the Department of Humanistic Studies of IULM University in collaboration with Florida State University, the University of Studies "Gabriele D'Annunzio" of Chieti-Pescara, the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and the University of Milan will be held on November 27, 10:15 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sala dei 146, IULM University (IULM 6), Milan.
A Round Table is scheduled during the day of study, with scholars and artists and the extraordinary participation of Lella Costa, artistic director of Teatro Carcano (Milan).
At the conclusion of the day, a theatrical performance Persei e Meduse, curated by Marianna Esposito (actress, director, dramaturg, director of the TeatRing company), and with the collaboration of the students of CUT (Centro Universitario Teatrale) of IULM University, will be held in the same Room 146 from 6:15 p.m.
"The show takes its cue from the myth of Perseus, an indomitable hero, who kills the terrible Gorgon Medusa, ridding the world of a frightening monster that petrifies with just a glance. But Medusa had been first and foremost an innocent woman, raped by Poseidon and punished for it by a goddess, Athena. And Perseus was the son of Danae, also an innocent woman, raped even by Zeus, punished by humans, besieged and offended in every way. In all this 'pain' Perseus does not want, he must kill Medusa through a mirror, in which he sees his own image merged with hers. How many Persei are there in Medusa, and how many Medusa in Persei?" (Marianna Esposito).
Conference, Roundtable and Play are open to the IULM community and the public. To participate, you must register at this link.
