IULM University presents the world premiere of the film project Il Pianto degli Eroi - The Iliad and the Trojan Women in Bollate Prison, a film produced by IULM Movie Lab, the University's audiovisual production center, which will be officially screened on Sunday, November 17 at 9 p.m. at Cinema Arlecchino during Filmmaker Festival 2024.
Conceived by filmmakers Bruno Bigoni (IULM professor) and Francesca Lolli, in collaboration with IULM University, Il Pianto degli Eroi represents a unique initiative that involved students from the master's course in Television, Cinema, and New Media and a group of inmates from Bollate Prison. Funded by the University and produced by IULM Movie Lab - with the support of the prison management, Coop. Sociale Articolo3 and the Ministry of Justice - the film was created with the intention of exploring the issues of war, using theater and acting as means of expression and deep reflection.
From April to June 2023, students, directors and a group of prisoners adapted texts from the Iliad and Trojan Women, studying scenes and working on the body and characters. Filming took place in July and lasted four weeks, followed by an editing and post-production phase completed in the summer of 2024.
The film uses the figures from the Iliad and the Trojan Women to analyze the theme of war from a novel perspective, setting it inside a prison. Here, war becomes a metaphor for the struggles and personal reflections of those living in a context of daily deprivation and conflict. Through theater, the prisoners were given the opportunity to play iconic characters such as Hector, Achilles and Ulysses, bringing aspects of their own experience to the stage and also using their languages of origin, symbolic of the different cultures that often clash in today's wars.
