Training Translators and Interpreters Today: Perspectives and Evolutions
December 2-3, 2024
Aula Seminari, IULM 1

Increasingly efficient technologies and Artificial Intelligence have radically changed the profession of interpreters and translators and have triggered a transformation process involving these professional figures. Procedures, tools, the use of IT support, work contexts, and types of output required have all changed. The convergence of different modes—writing, speech and sound, audiovisual media, multimedia—has also become all-pervasive, requiring translators and interpreters to understand the semiotic complexity of texts, navigate different codes, and, above all, respond to the new demands of a highly diversified market.

Training translators and interpreters today is a complex task, which can only rest on the results of rigorous scientific research that investigates the directions of change, keeping pace with an extremely rapid evolution. This conference adopts an interdisciplinary perspective, encouraging the exchange of ideas among scholars of Translation and Interpreting Studies, audiovisual translation, linguistics, Corpus Linguistics, discourse analysis, language teaching, and IT applied to translation and interpreting, in order to understand how best to orient the training of future professionals in the sector.

This project is a follow-up to research carried out since 2019 investigating the evolution and diversification of translation and interpreting activities in the contemporary world under the impact of new media and technologies. The event is organized with the collaboration and support of the International Center for Research on Collaborative Translation.
