Why do we play games, IULM Game Lab returns with The game is a serious thing

Culture - 27 May 2026 - Event date 11 June 2026

Following the success of the event dedicated to Super Mario, IULM Game Lab proposes a new day open to the public to reflect on gaming as an educational tool, cultural practice and relational space. Appointment on June 11 from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Why do we play? And what do we really learn when we play?

From these questions comes "Gaming is a Serious Thing," the new IULM Game Lab event scheduled for Thursday, June 11, from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m., at IULM 7 Open Space (Via Filargo 38), following the success of the first event dedicated to 40 years of Super Mario.

Promoted on the occasion of the International Day of Play, the initiative proposes an afternoon open to the university community and the public to explore the educational, cultural and social value of play, understood not as mere entertainment, but as a space for learning, imagination and relationship building.

Through talks, interdisciplinary discussion and participatory activities, the event will explore the role of play in developing narrative and relational skills, collaboration and community building.

The program will open with the talk "Homo ludens 2.0. Play between Industry, Culture and Contemporary Society," dedicated to the role of play in today's society, followed by "Faces of the Dice. Voices, Stories and Game Tables," a conversation on role-playing and tabletop gaming as experiences of shared storytelling and informal learning.

Guests will include Andrea Ligabue, ludologist and coordinator of the Modena section of Game Science Research Center; Viola Stefanello journalist forThe Post, Maurizio Cutrino, director of Assogiocattoli; Ilenia Corea, Executive Director Toys Italy;Giordana Moroni, journalist for Multiplayer.it and president of Gioco dell'Anno; Nicola De Gobbis, founder of Need Games and Lorenzo Tucci Sorrentino, managing director of Cranio Creations.

With this second event, IULM Game Lab continues its path of research and experimentation on contemporary play languages, bringing into dialogue didactics, culture, media and participation.
