IULM Authors: The Accessible Museum

IULM University, as part of the IULM Autori series, presents the book *Il museo accessibile* by Maria Emanuela Bruni and Sofia Bilotta.

The accessibility of an exhibition or cultural space cannot be considered a corrective measure or an after-the-fact adjustment; rather, it must be an integral part of the conceptualization process from the very earliest stages of research, design, and curation. This is a cross-cutting and multidisciplinary approach that requires co-design and close collaboration among diverse areas of expertise and experience.

The book emphasizes, in particular, the role of direct participation in the design process by people with disabilities—a role that is fundamental not only for identifying physical, sensory, and cognitive barriers, but also for creating truly accessible spaces, exhibitions, services, and cultural activities from the very beginning. Accessibility thus emerges not merely as the application of technical standards, but as a culture to be built and a shared responsibility, grounded in listening to people’s experiences, experimentation, and the celebration of differences.
