Monica Morazzoni

CURRENT POSITION:

Monica Morazzoni is Full Professor of Geography at the Faculty of Arts, Fashion and Tourism of IULM University in Milan, where she teaches Cultural Geography, Territorial Policies, and Urban Tourism and Sustainability. She is the Rector’s Delegate for Sport and a member of the Sport Commission of the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI). She is affiliated to the Department of Humanities, where she coordinates the section “Human Sciences. Cultures, Policies and Territory” and is a member of the Research Quality Assurance (AQ) group.

She has also carried out teaching and research activities at the University of Milan, the Catholic University of Milan, the University of Milano-Bicocca, the Université de La Manouba in Tunis, the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas in El Salvador, and Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat. Author of more than 100 scientific publications on the relationship between tourism and mountains, technological innovation, urban spaces, and fragile areas, she has for years been actively involved in local, national, and international research groups.

In the 2021-2024 period, she was Associated Investigator for the IULM local unit of the PRIN project “MIND – The Mountains within the Mountain. Narratives, dynamics and development pathways in the Italian mountains: new interpretations”, while for the 2027-2030 period she is Responsible of the IULM local unit of the PRIN project “AURORA – Artificial Intelligence and Urban Reconfigurations: infrastructures, practices and narratives in contempORAry cities”. From 2021 to 2026 she coordinated the working group “Geography of Innovation and Information” of the Association of Italian Geographers (AGeI). She is also a member of the international association of study centres “Rete Montagna/Alpine Network” and of the AGeI working groups “Mountain Geography”, “Geography and Sport”, and “Artificial Intelligence and Metaverses”.

In the field of applied research and Knowledge Enhancement, in 2019 she coordinated the project “Urban Crossings: Neighbourhoods Tell Their Stories” together with the University of Milano-Bicocca and the Politecnico di Milano. In 2022 she was scientific coordinator of the project “BaronaSoundscapes”, funded by Fondazione Cariplo and by the Department of Humanities of IULM University. She also conceived and curated the travelling carto-photographic exhibition “La Montagna al Femminile”, a special university project for 2023.

In 2026 she was selected as one of thirty Italian women promoting female empowerment through sport and sustainable development, an award conferred by the United Nations, the Municipality of Milan, and ONElab. Since 2013 she has been the Italian representative of the Association Tunisienne pour la Prévention de l’Immigration Clandestine.

She coordinates the book series “Geografia, Turismo, Cultura” (CLUEB) and “Parallelo Zero. Geografie Metropolitane” (Piccoli Giganti) and is a member of the editorial committee of the series “Studi e Ricerche sul Territorio” (Unicopli). She is also a member of the editorial board of the ANVUR Class A scientific journal “Geography Notebooks”. She serves as a referee for the main Italian journals in the field of geography, and provides scientific and editorial consultancy to major Italian publishers in geography education (Mondadori, De Agostini, Zanichelli, Loescher).
