PROFESSIONAL APPOINTMENTS:
Dr. Manuela de Carlo is Full Professor of Tourism Management, Director of the Department of Business, Law, Economics and Consumer Behaviour "Carlo Ricciardi", Director of the Master in International Tourism and Hospitality (MITH) and member of the Academic Board of the PhD in Communication Markets and Society at the IULM University of Milan.
In 2004 she launched the Master in International Tourism and Hospitality, the first Master in Tourism in Italy taught in English. Since 2004, the MTM programme has received 1500 applications from 43 countries and has established partnerships with over 200 leading companies in the tourism and hospitality sector.
In 2016, she launched the M.Sc. in Hospitality and Tourism Management, the first dual degree programme in Italy, in partnership with a hospitality school (Rosen College of Hospitality Management of the University of Central Florida).
From 2017 to date, Manuela has created several executive courses and specialisations in partnership with academies and companies in the tourism sector, including: Specialisation in Revenue Management (with Starhotels); Specialisation in Luxury Marketing and Client Experience (with Dorchester Collection); Specialisation in Leisure Destinations and Special Events (with Gardaland and Zamperla); Certified Course for Heads of Service (with Academy Accor); Executive Master in Guest Service Management (with NH Hotel Group and AccorHotels Group).
At IULM she teaches Tourism Management; Destination Management; Managing Hospitality and Guest Service Organisations.
LINES OF RESEARCH:
Her research focuses on collective capability development and collaboration strategies; technology adoption by tourism organisations, focusing on social media and service personalisation; sustainable development strategies in tourism; the impact of AI on hospitality business models. Her research has been published in leading academic journals. These include Journal of Business Research, European Management Journal, Annals of Tourism Research, International Journal of Hospitality Management, Current Issues in Tourism, Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research, and International Journal of Tourism Research. She is Associate Editor of the Journal of Destination Marketing Management.
In 2015-2016 she was a former member of the Expert Group (GEV) of the Economic and Statistical Sciences Area within the Italian Research Agency for the Evaluation of Universities and Research Institutions (ANVUR).
In 2021 she was appointed by the Italian Ministry of Tourism as a member of the "Standing Committee for the Promotion of Italian Tourism" as an expert.
In 2022-24, the Italian Ministry of Tourism appointed her a member of the "National Tourism Observatory."
She has carried out numerous consultancy and research/intervention projects on sustainable development, competitive performance improvement and capacity building for companies in the tourism and hospitality sector (including Amadeus, Accor, AIM Group, Gardaland, Dorchester Collection, Masi Agricola, TH Resort, and Cassa Depositi e Prestiti - a leading Italian development bank) and for institutions such as the OECD, ENIT, the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Universities and Research.
