Gianni Canova is Rector of IULM University and Full Professor of Film History and Filmology.

Previously, he was Deputy Vice Rector, Vice Rector for Education, Communication and Events at the same University. He was also Dean of the Faculty of Communication, Public Relations and Advertising at IULM.

Before joining IULM, he taught Poetics of Contemporary Cinema at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome and held courses and workshops on visual communication at Bocconi University in Milan.

Founder and director of the monthly film and entertainment magazine Duel (later Duellanti), he was film critic for la Repubblica, Sette del Corriere della Sera and la Voce by Indro Montanelli. He has collaborated with Bianco & nero, Film TV, Letture, Segnocinema, Rolling Stone, Elle and Vogue and for over ten years he has been the owner of a column on cinema and economics in the magazine Economia & Management published by SDA Bocconi. He is currently in charge of the format I mestieri del cinema on the portal "We Love cinema".

Among his publications, the volumes Ignorantocrazia. Because in Italy there is no cultural democracy (Bompiani, 2019). Divi Duci Guitti Papi Caimani. In 2002, he edited the volume on cinema of the Enciclopedia Universale Garzanti series and edited the book 1965-1969 Storia del cinema italiano (in 15 volumes) published by the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema, published in April 2002 by Marsilio. In 2004-2005, he coordinated research on the relationship between Italian cinema and technology, the results of which are published in the book Il lato oscuro delle macchine. The representation of technology in contemporary Italian cinema (Carocci, 2005). In 2011, he coordinated with Giulio Bursi research on the film archive of the AEM in Milan, the results of which are published in Cinema elettrico (Rizzoli 2011). Also in 2011, he curated and coordinated with Luisella Farinotti research on the "geography" of contemporary Italian cinema, the results of which are published in the Atlas of Italian Cinema. Corpi paesaggi figure del contemporaneo (Garzanti, 2011).

He has also been the curator of numerous multimedia exhibitions.

In 2002, he conceived and curated the exhibition Le città in/visibili, inspired by the novel of the same name by Italo Calvino (Triennale di Milano, 4 November 2002-9 March 2003).

In 2004, he was the curator of the exhibition Dreams. I sogni degli italiani in 50 anni di pubblicità televisiva italiana, on behalf of Rai and Triennale di Milano (Triennale, 16 February - 31 May 2004).

In 2007-2008, he conceived and curated the exhibition annisettanta. The long decade of the short century (Triennale di Milano, October 2007-March 2008), which reached over 80,000 visitors.

In 2011, he curated the Venice Film Festival Al cinema con il cappello. Borsalino and other stories (Triennale di Milano, January-March 2011).

In 2012/13, he curated the cinema section of the Dracula Film Festival and the Myth of Vampires (Triennale di Milano, 23 November 2012-24 March 2013).

In 2013, he curated the Alfred Hitchcock Festival in the films of Universal Pictures (Palazzo Reale, Milan, from 21/6/2013 to 22/09/2013).

In 2014, he curated the exhibition L'universo di Pier Paolo Pasolini, at the Castello Carlo V in Lecce.

In 2017, he collaborated as an artistic consultant in the realization of the exhibition Viva Vivaldi. The Four Season Mystery at the Diocesan Museum of Venice (from 13 May 2017 - until the end of 2018).

In 2019, he was co-curator of MIAC - Italian Museum of Audiovisual and Cinema in Cinecittà

He then collaborated as curator of the cinema section at numerous exhibitions including Trash. When waste becomes art (edited by Lea vergine, produced by MART of Trento and Rovereto), bright red. Mutation, disfigurement and blood in contemporary art (curated by Francesca Alfano Miglietti, PAC of Milan), Space and architecture in Italian cinema (Mole Vanvitelliana, Ancona), Play Attention Please (curated by Luca Beatrice, MAN of Nuoro), Il Bacio. Italian art between romance and the twentieth century (Scuderie del Castello Visconteo, Pavia 2009).

He has also worked extensively for television. Author with Felice Pesoli of the programme Le parole del cinema (broadcast by Telepiù), he has made videos and documentaries on personalities of contemporary Italian culture (Alda Merini, Leo Wachters, Ettore Scola, Nino Manfredi) and formats or programmes for Netsystem and My-Tv. He collaborated in the creation of Bradipo, a sit-com broadcast in 2001 by MTV and is the author of the interactive sit-com Come tu mi vuoi, produced and distributed online by My-Tv.

Since 2005, he has been a film critic for Sky Cinema, as well as the author and presenter of the programme Il cinemaniaco.

From 2001 to 2009, he was Artistic Director of the Festival "Leggere il Novecento" in Ancona.

From 2001 to 2005, he served as the Italian representative of the Scientific Committee of the International Film Festival of Locarno (Switzerland)

From 2005 to 2007, he was a member of the Scientific Committee of the Rome Film Festival.

From 2008 to 2009, he was artistic director of the Martini Première event for the award of a prize to the most innovative Italian films from the point of view of experimentation and research on language.

From 2010 to 2014, he was President of the CUC, the scientific association that brings together all the lecturers of Cinema, television and new media of Italian universities.

Since 2012, he has been the creator and director of the magazine 8 ½. Numbers, visions and perspectives of Italian cinema, published by Cinecittà/Istituto Luce

Since 2013, he has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome.

In 2014, he curated the retrospective Effetto Luce to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Istituto Luce in Rome.

In 2016, he was appointed to the interministerial commission MIUR MiBACT, which was to draw up guidelines for the inclusion of film education in schools.

In 2017, he was appointed to the Superior Council for Cinema and Audiovisual at MiBACT.

In 2018, he held a "carte blanche" on Federico Fellini at the Italian Film Festival in Villerupt.

In 2010, he made his debut in the Italian fiction scene with Palpebre, a dark and visionary thriller set in Milan in 2004.
