International Center for Research on Collaborative Translation

The Center builds on the scientific activities launched under the international research project "Collaborative Translation: Approaches and Perspectives" (https://www.iulm.it/en/ricerca/progetti-di-ricerca/ricerca-dipartimentale/Laurenti_2/Laurenti_2), with the goal of expanding and strengthening this line of research. 

Adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the Center aims to conduct and coordinate research within the fields internationally recognized as Translation Studies and Interpreting Studies. 

The Center fosters a collaborative research environment and promotes the dissemination of scientific knowledge by adopting methodologies tailored to developing innovative contributions. 

The Center’s scientific activity focuses on:

• Producing internationally recognized basic research. 

• Developing highly innovative, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research methodologies. 

• Building a broad scientific community through an international network of individual and institutional relationships. To this end, the Center invests in international partnership programs with leading research centers, visiting scholars, and visiting students, while also conducting research initiatives designed to facilitate knowledge exchange with renowned academics. 

• Supporting the internationalization efforts of the Department of Humanities at IULM University through the active involvement of affiliated faculty, positioning IULM as a recognized scientific leader in Translation Studies and Interpreting Studies. 

• Securing research funding through competitive national and international calls, as well as partnerships with public and private organizations. 

Objectives

The Research Center promotes initiatives aimed at:

• Promoting and organizing research, scientific outreach, and documentation in education and training; 

• Facilitating collaboration among university faculty, researchers, and external experts to develop methodologies and tools related to collaborative translation; 

• Advancing internationalization by building connections with research groups at other universities, associations, national and international entities, and experts in relevant disciplines; 

• Piloting and promoting advanced professional training programs in collaborative translation; 

• Disseminating findings, studies, and experimental projects; 

• Supporting educational development in multimedia and e-learning, including through the use of appropriate technologies; 

• Facilitating curricular and thesis internship opportunities for students enrolled in the IULM Master’s Degree in Specialized Translation and Conference Interpreting, as well as students from partner universities and institutions.

 Specifically, the Center aims to:

• Develop scientific research projects on core thematic areas; 

• Oversee the publication of academic studies in the field; 

• Conduct applied research on educational technologies and mediated communication, as well as test new models through distance learning, communication, and multimedia initiatives—including services tailored for businesses and institutions in line with the University’s "Third Mission" strategy; 

• Provide support to the University and external partners in producing audiovisual and multimedia materials for scientific, educational, and documentation purposes; 

• Design projects and define programs aimed at developing new models for collaborative translation; 

• Structure projects and deliver training programs, with a particular emphasis on doctoral-level (Level III), advanced, and continuing education; 

• Participate in national and international research calls and projects, including joint initiatives with other Italian and international universities and scientific institutions; 

• Establish formal agreements with Italian and international universities and scientific institutions; 

• Conduct research and provide expert scientific consulting—including applied research—on behalf of third parties or at the request of public and private entities, nationally and internationally. 

Stakeholder Positioning

An international orientation is a defining feature of the International Center for Research on Collaborative Translation. Beyond the transnational scope of its research topics, internationalization is ensured through active stakeholder engagement as a key driver of research impact. The Center aims to:

• Identify and engage key stakeholders in translation and linguistic mediation; 

• Explore interests and priority topics relevant to specific stakeholder groups; 

• Integrate into international research networks; 

• Maintain ongoing dialogue with stakeholders; 

• Attract collaborative proposals from Italian and international institutions, organizations, and companies.

 Research Methods and Tools

By hosting seminars, lectures, workshops, and conferences, the Center strengthens an international research network focused on its core themes, fostering greater awareness of collaborative translation practices that have yet to be systematically studied.

Outputs

Scientific results are disseminated through seminars and lectures (in Italy and abroad), international conferences, and published articles and books.

 Specifically, the Research Center aims to:

• Conduct original research;
  
  
• Publish research findings in prestigious international journals and book series; 

• Organize academic conferences, workshops, and public outreach activities; 

• Deliver training activities, work experiences, and internships for professional translators, researchers, and students; 

• Carry out commissioned research projects for institutions and enterprises; 

• Support career-building work experiences for students in the LM-94 Master’s degree program.
