"As members of the scientific and academic community of the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna we are strongly impressed and disturbed by the news about the arrest in recent days of a member of our university community, the student of the Erasmus Mundus "Gemma" Master's degree in Women's and Gender Studies. We strongly request that the representatives of our Government and the European Union, who have already taken prompt action, follow the matter closely so that Patrick Zaki's fundamental rights are not violated in any way. Armed with the values that distinguish our academic community at all levels, such as freedom of thought, the importance of critical thinking, responsibility and social commitment, we reaffirm the importance of defending human rights at all levels and with all means, and more particularly the right to individual freedom, political rights and the protection of freedom of expression. We are fully committed to ensuring that Patrick Zaki can return to our university classrooms as soon as possible. Until
then, we consider it our duty to do everything possible so that the Italian Government and the European Union do not stop doing everything possible to encourage Patrick's return to our community". Bologna, February 12, 2020.
