IULM Professor Riccardo Manzotti guest speaker at International Symposium on Consciousness and AI in Japan

Artificial intelligence - 25 March 2025 - Event date 24 March 2025

IULM Professor Riccardo Manzotti among speakers at an international symposium in Japan on artificial consciousness, creativity and language

On March 26, 2025, Riccardo Manzotti, Professor of Theoretical Philosophy in IULM, will be the guest speaker at the International Symposium Self-Awareness, Creativity, and Language in Artificial and Natural Systems, organized by the University of Tokyo and the Chiba Institute of Technology.

The event will bring together international scholars in artificial intelligence, robotics, artificial life, complex systems science, and biology to explore the future prospects of research on artificial consciousness, creativity, and language. An opportunity to investigate the limits and potential of AI, questioning traditional conceptions of the mind and subjective experience.

Riccardo Manzotti will speak with a paper entitled Artificial consciousness as a mirror of ourselves, analyzing how the idea of an artificial consciousness challenges our current notions of mind and experience.

Other speakers include:

  • Luc Steels (Royal Society KVAB, Brussels) with Can LLMs be a path to awareness and creativity?

  • Takashi Ikegami (University of Tokyo) with Can consciousness reside in an LLM? Feedback from embodiment and introspective processes

  • Tom Froese (OIST, Okinawa) with Linguistic sense-making with or without human experience? Advances in AI imply that competence can be disentangled from consciousness

  • Ken Mogi (SONY CSL, Tokyo) with AI, Human Cognition, and Conscious Supremacy

The symposium provides an important opportunity for scientific discussion on how AI can learn, evolve, and develop new forms of linguistic interaction. The participation of Riccardo Manzotti confirms IULM's role in the international landscape of research on the connections between artificial intelligence and the human condition.
