On Wednesday, March 12, at 5 p.m., the opening of the 32nd edition of Sguardi Altrove Women's International Film Festival, the renowned international festival dedicated to women's cinema, will be held at IULM 6 in Sala dei 146. The event marks the beginning of the festival that will also be held at IULM on Thursday, March 13, again at 5 p.m. in Sala dei 146, and will continue until April 5 in various locations, including the Anteo Palazzo del Cinema, Cinemino di via Seneca, the spaces of Wanted Clan and Accademia09, as well as the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.
During the opening in IULM, the short films competing in the Sguardi (S)confinati section, an international competition reserved for young talents under 35, will be screened. A jury of IULM students will be asked to select the winner of their category, thus contributing to the enhancement of emerging young people in the international film scene. The films will be screened in the original language with subtitles: in particular, the subtitles of the "Sguardi (s)confinati" section and Japan Day were created by students of the Master's Degree in Specialised Translation and Conference Interpreting with the coordination of Professor Mara Logaldo (professor of Audiovisual Translation IULM), offering the audience an immersive and authentic experience.
Institutional greetings will be given by Rector Valentina Garavaglia, Dean of the Faculty of Interpreting and Translation Giovanna Rocca and Director of the Department of Humanities Elena Liverani. This will be followed by the official opening of the festival with a congratulatory aperitif in the presence of filmmakers and festival artistic director Patrizia Rappazzo.

The Sguardi Altrove Women's International Film Festival, features feature and short films, documentaries and fiction, with three competitive sections: Nuovi Sguardi and Sguardi (S)confinati, dedicated respectively to international women-directed feature and short films, and #FrameItalia, a window on Italian cinema directed by both women and men. In addition to the competition, the festival will host previews, workshops, and panel discussions on current issues such as labor and economic gender violence, conflict and human rights, diversity, inclusion and disability.
Special events include a tribute to Elvira Notari, the first director and producer in the history of Italian cinema, with the screening of a documentary dedicated to her with the narrating voice of Iaia Forte. In addition, the festival will celebrate female-directed Japanese cinema with a focus on Kinuyo Tanaka, pioneering actress and director, muse of Kenji Mizoguchi and collaborator of masters such as Yasujiro Ozu. Subtitling of the Japanese films is also by IULM Master's degree students.
The screenings are open to the public. Free admission.
