Identity and belonging in Milan's neighborhoods
Presented by the Rector, Professor Garavaglia, and the Deputy Mayor of Milan, Scavuzzo, the research of IULM University
The Rector of IULM University, Professor Valentina Garavaglia, and the Deputy Mayor of Milan, Anna Scavuzzo, presented at the Circolo Caldara Study Center the research Neighborhood Brand, City Brand. Identities, Belongings, Relationships, conducted by the University's Observatory on Public Communication, Public Branding and Digital Transformation .
The Observatory's survey - led by Scientific Director Professor Stefano Rolando and worked on by IULM professors Federica Fortunato and Rosantonietta Scramaglia - showed how each neighborhood in Milan represents a strong identity for those who live there, belying the view of the suburbs as marginal places. They, in fact, although farther from the center, thanks to infrastructure investments, new mobility networks and a growing development of cultural hubs, are more connected and attractive
It is precisely the universities that have played a key role in the enhancement of Milan's suburbs, through the presence of campuses and the activation of urban regeneration processes.
One example is precisely what we experience every day in IULM: in the Barona neighborhood, IULM University has helped transform the area into a cultural and aggregative district, promoting its revitalization and strengthening its sense of community. A phenomenon, this one, that extends to other areas of the city, demonstrating how contemporary Milan continues to strive to be increasingly polycentric, inclusive and constantly evolving.
