World Environment Day: IULM's commitment to a more sustainable campus

Sustainability - 05 June 2026

On the occasion of World Environment Day, IULM recounts some of the actions it is taking to make the campus increasingly sustainable, through interventions involving energy, consumption, water and mobility

The initiatives are part of the path promoted by the IULM Sustainability Committee, chaired by Prof. Federica Ricceri, the University's Delegate for Sustainability and Social Responsibility, with the aim of encouraging increasingly responsible management of resources and growing attention to the environmental impacts of university activities

Ongoing initiatives include the gradual renovation of lights in university spaces, with the adoption of more efficient solutions that consume less energy and last longer.

The University is also progressively adopting more sustainable and efficient heating systems. A change that has already led to a 7 percent reduction in gas consumption from the previous year

To improve energy management, IULM has begun installing sensors throughout the campus with the goal of better understanding where and when energy is consumed and taking more precise action to avoid waste.

Attention to sustainability also comes through the responsible use of water resources. New taps, renovated water columns and a consumption metering system now make it possible to better monitor water use and manage it more effectively.

Finally, IULM presented the City Council with a plan to rethink the daily commute of those who work and study at the University, promoting the use of public transportation, cycling and shared forms of mobility.

Alongside infrastructure interventions, IULM is also promoting more conscious daily behaviors through theEnergy Saving Vademecum, which collects practical indications addressed to the university community to help reduce consumption and waste.

IULM's move toward sustainability is not a goal, but a path. A commitment that grows every year through new actions, new technologies and new habits, for a campus that is increasingly responsible towards people and the planet.
