Clashing Classics: Theater and Multilingualism to Unite Europe

Theatre - 17 February 2025

Milan, Avignon, Berlin: three theaters for a single audience

The Clashing Classics festival, at the heart of the European project "(Trans)National European Theatre," brings together three theaters, four languages (German, Italian, French, English) and a single audience thanks to the simultaneous enjoyment of performances, live and streaming, surtitles (also for the hearing impaired) and simultaneous interpreting. This initiative involves France (Université d'Avignon), Italy (Università IULM, for translations and streaming, in collaboration with PACTA dei Teatri) and Berlin (artistic collective Multicultural City).

The Clashing Classics festival enhances the live theater experience with surtitles, subtitles and new technologies, allowing audiences from different locations to attend and dialogue in real time. Each show, performed in turn in one of the three theaters, will be live-streamed in the other two with multilingual surtitles and subtitles. Audiences in Milan, Avignon or Berlin, and those who attend via streaming, will enjoy the same stories in the original language, sharing opinions in the post-show via remote interpretation.

The Clashing Classics festival will stage the works of major European authors at the PACTA Hall, Via Ulisse Dini in MILAN (Stop M2 Abbiategrasso) according to the following schedule:

February 27: Live-streamed from Berlin, Theater im Delphi, Angst Essen Seele auf (Fear Eats the Soul) by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, directed by Monika Dobrowlańska.

March 3: live, Il gioco delle parti (The Rules of the Game) by Luigi Pirandello, directed by Paolo Bignamini.

March 6: Live from Avignon, Archipel Théâtre, L'Île des Esclaves (The Island of Slaves) by Pierre De Marivaux, adapted by Catherine Clive, directed by Helen Landau.

For IULM students, PACTA is offering reduced tickets at a cost of €8, a subscription to the three shows at a cost of €20 (by communicating the code PROMO8 at the box office or presenting your university ID).
