Angelo Turco, geographer, is President of the IULM University Foundation. He was Vice Pro-Rector, Pro-Rector with responsibility for Education and Research from 2015 to 2017, and Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Tourism and Markets, from 2012 to 2015 at the IULM University. Full Professor since 1986, he has taught at the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Milan, at the Faculty of Architecture of the Politecnico di Milano, at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of L'Aquila. Abroad, he has carried out many training activities (thematic courses, lectures, conferences, seminars, doctoral tutorials) at European, American and African universities and has been visiting professor at the Universities of Paris X, Pau and Grenoble (France). In 1992, he founded the annals "Terra d'Africa", which he directed until its cessation in 2010, and, in 2004, the CARTOLAB cartography laboratory at the University of L'Aquila.

International consultant for spatial planning, landscape protection and enhancement, environmental governance, sustainable local development, participatory management of natural resources, especially in Europe, Africa and developing countries, with particular attention to cross-border areas. He is an evaluator of international cooperation activities and projects in Africa (Piedmont Region, Abruzzo Region, European Union), of Peace Keeping and GDR activities and projects (Central African Republic, 2009; Sierra Leone, 2010; Guinea Bissau, 2013) and of scientific research projects at the CNRS (France) and the SNSF (Switzerland).

As part of his university internationalisation programmes, he was responsible for cooperation agreements with European (François Rabelais, Tours), African (Abdou Moumouni, Niamey, Niger) and Latin American (UFMG, Belo Horizonte, Brazil) universities. He is currently responsible at IULM University for university cooperation agreements with the Joseph Fourier University of Grenoble, institutional cooperation with UN Women Malawi, tourist cooperation in the region of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique.

Honorary member of the Italian Geographic Society since 2013.

Main areas of scientific interest

His research interests are based on a critical reflection on the history of geographical thought and on the methodology of socio-territorial disciplines, particularly on the thrust of post-Kuhnian epistemologies.

- Theoretically, the main lines of conceptual development concern the process of territorialisation and the configurations of territorialisation.

Particular attention is paid to the territory as the outcome and condition of social action, focusing on the influence of political, economic and more widely cultural systems on the organization of the territory, the articulation of places, the texture of landscapes, the balance of environments.

- On the empirical-analytical level, some basic themes are privileged, such as the semiotics of the territory, the territorial symbolisms that contribute to the constitution and to the landscape development both in urban and regional context, the environmental governance, the sustainable local development, the cartographic technologies and the mobility cultures and, in particular, the migratory imaginary.

- On a regional level, the privileged framework is Africa, with research particularly attentive to the territory as a cultural and landscape asset (patrimoine, cultural heritage) and as an identity structure. Particular attention is paid to the processes of socio-territorial change that, operating at different scales (global, regional, national, local) affect the continent and feed symbolic and material dynamics in both urban and rural areas. In recent years, research interests for Latin America and Italy have been growing, with a particular focus on local development, based on new processes of territorial legitimacy, inclusive decision-making and participatory communication.

- On the application level, research is also carried out on an application basis in the context of local development projects focused on the conservative enhancement of the common heritage, primarily the landscape, the environment and the places of identity. In the cooperation projects with the so-called developing countries, this can be grasped through the enhancement of local natural and cultural resources, basic knowledge and territorial institutions. Particular attention shall be paid to the impacts of cooperation projects on the processes of self-generating territorialisation, at different scales (micro-projects, macro-projects) and with different actors (national states, decentralised cooperation, EU, NGOs).

In this context, projects aimed at mitigating migratory flows and integration policies are worth mentioning.
