Logaldo, Mara


Mara Logaldo (PhD) is tenured Assistant Professor in English Language and Translation at the Faculty of Interpreting, Translation, Linguistic and Cultural Studies (IULM, Milan). In 2018 she obtained Italy’s National Scientific Qualification (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale) for Associate Professorship. She is also a member of the Doctoral Board within the PhD Programme in Visual and Media Studies.

After graduating in Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Milan, she obtained her PhD in English Studies from the University of Genova, with a thesis on the structural function of metaphor in Henry James’ novels and novellas during one of his most experimental phases (Figura e rappresentazione in Henry James.1896-1901, Edizioni Dell’Orso, Alessandria, 2000).

She started teaching at IULM as Adjunct Professor in 1993, holding courses on English and Anglo-American literature, language and culture. Since 2000, as a tenured Assistant Professor of English Language and Translation, she has regularly taught courses of English for Special Purposes, both at graduate and postgraduate levels: English for Journalism and Content Editing (MA Degree Programme in Journalism, Publishing and Multimodal Communication); English for the Media (MA Degree Programme in Television, Cinema, and New Media); Audiovisual Translation - Dubbing and Subtitling (MA Degree Course in Specialised Translation), English for Communication and Public Relations (BA Degree Programme in Public Relations). She also gives lectures and holds workshops of Academic English within Doctoral Programme in Visual and Media Studies.

Her research interests have focused on rhetoric and discursive practices in different text types, with a pragmatic, multimodal and systemic-functional approach. She has published extensively on language issues in literary journalism (Cronaca come romanzo. Truman Capote e il New Journalism, Arcipelago, Milano, 2003), hypermodal (Augmented Linguistics, Arcipelago, Milano, 2012) and audiovisual texts (“What Is Royalty Without a Voice? The Performance of Power in The King’s Speech”, Pólemos, 9, 2, 2015). She has lately concentrated her research on captions, both as photo captions (“’The Last Laugh?’ A Multimodal Analysis of Captions in Photojournalism, Pólemos, 11, 1, 2017; “Capturing/Captioning Wildlife in Nature Photography”, in Antelmi, D., Logaldo, M., Testi brevi di accompagnamento, Universitas Studiorum and subtitles) and subtitles. She is currently writing a book on the pragmatics of audiovisual translation.

Mara Logaldo has been a member of several PRIN (Research Projects of National Interest), departmental and inter-departmental research groups. Among recent projects, “Norm and Variation in Translation: Theory, Practice, Profession from Print to Orality (Department of Humanities, coordinated by Prof. Giuliana Garzone, 2018-); Knowledge Dissemination across Media: Discursive Practices, Continuity and Transformation, Ideologies and Epistemologies” (PRIN Project, Unit of Milan coordinated by prof. Giuliana Garzone, 2018-2019); “Short Texts. Captions, Subtitles, Taglines: Linguistic and Semiotic approaches” (Department of Humanities, co-coordinated by prof. Donella Antelmi, 2018-2019); “The Genre of the Book Review” (Department of Communication, coordinated by Prof. Paolo Giovannetti).

She has participated in numerous international conferences as invited speaker or presenter. Among others, the annual or/biannual conferences organized by AIA (Italian Asssociation of English Studies), AIDEL (Italian Association of Law and Literature), ESSE (European Society of English Studies) and ESPRit (European Society for Periodical Research); “Globeng”, University of Verona, 2008; “Interdisciplinary perspective on Semantics”, AMU University, Aligarh, India, 2011; “Literay Journalism in Times of Crisis: 1870-1970“, University of Warwick, 2016.

She has also been a member of Scientific and Organizing Committees for the following international conferences: “Conflict in the Periodical Press”, Sixth Annual Conference of the European Society for Periodical Research, IULM, 28-30 June 2017; “Words Worth Watching: Changing Perspectives on Captions”, IULM 18 June 2018: “Knowledge Dissemination. Ethics and Ideology in Specialised Communication: Language and Discursive Practices”, IULM-University of Milan, 29 November-1st December 2018.

Since 2018 she has been appointed Conference Liaison Officer within the Committee of the European Society for Periodical Research. She is also a member of AIA and AIDEL.

Mara Logaldo is a member of the editorial board of Poli-femo and of the advisory board of The Interiors. Annual Journal of English Studies (ISSN 2319-4804, India). She has also been a member of the editorial board of Testo a fronte and guest-edited the special issue on “Conflict in the Periodical Pressof JEPS (Journal of European Periodical Studies, Editor-in-Chief prof. Marianne van Remoortel, Ghent University). Between 2003 and 2011 she collaborated with Nomos Edizioni, translating several art books from Italian into English. She has been referee of the ECHO series (Aracne) and of many scientific journals (L’Analisi linguistica e letteraria, Il confronto letterario among others).
