The exhibition Game Video Art: A Survey was an official event of the XXI International Exhibition of the Milan Triennale, XXI Century. Design After Design. It was the most comprehensive survey of video game installations ever organized in Italy, offering a selection of works created by thirty international artists between 2006 and 2016. Curated by Matteo Bittanti and Vincenzo Trione, then Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Tourism and Markets, the exhibition was strongly supported by Prof. Gianni Canova.

The exhibited works, known as machinima, stood at the intersection of videogames, cinema, theater and animation. These installations were developed through the creative appropriation of popular titles such as The Sims, SimCity, Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty. This was not just a new aesthetic, but a new way of playing with the image. The machinima, a paradigmatic example of remix, prompted a reflection on the roles of the author and the viewer in the digital age.

A world premiere for Italy was The Night Journey, Bill Viola's latest project, developed together with the Game Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. This work represented a unique fusion of art and video game, offering an immersive and reflective experience that captivated visitors with its emotional and visual power.

The exhibition was realized with the collaboration of second-year students of the Master of Arts, Heritage and Markets degree program, with the critical coordination of Anna Luigia De Simone. The project offered a survey of artistic practices related to the video game imaginary, while also attempting to formulate hypotheses about the future of this evolving artistic field.

Game Video Art: A Survey offered a unique opportunity to reflect on the evolution of video games as an art form, highlighting the latter's ability to explore complex themes through interactivity and digital narrative. The exhibition invited the audience to question the potential of video games as an artistic medium and their increasingly central role in the landscape of contemporary culture.
