Border Walls curated by Alexander Bellman and Group C14
In 2021, IULM University hosted Border Walls, an exhibition/installation dedicated to the concept of borders, a highly topical and multifaceted issue. Curated by Professors Leonardo Capano and Emilio Mazza, lecturers in the Department of Humanities of the Faculty of Arts and Tourism, the exhibition was conceived and coordinated by architect Alexander Bellman together with the C14 Group.
The exhibition actively involved the academic community: students from the Bachelor of Arts, Performing Arts, Cultural Events, and the Master of Arts in Television, Cinema and New Media, as well as recent graduates, collaborated in the creation of the exhibit.
Border Walls was part of the Word of the Year project: after 'Money' in 2019, the term chosen for 2020 was 'Border,' a concept that has become even more relevant in the wake of the pandemic. The exhibition explored the meaning of the border in its different forms: physical barrier, cultural division, political or symbolic boundary. An exhibition tour that, through numbers and historical references, recounted the evolution of borders over time, from ancient walls to contemporary barriers.
The initiative confirmed IULM's role as a cultural space open to the city, involving not only the academic community but also the Barona neighborhood, with the aim of stimulating debate on a central theme of our time.
