The Soul’s Journey: Graciela Iturbide

02 October 2025 - Event date 14 October 2025

The Mexican photographer on view at the Exhibition Hall

One of the world’s most renowned photographers, Mexican artist Graciela Iturbide—awarded the Princesa de Asturias Prize for the Arts in 2025—will be the focus of an international exhibition at the Exhibition Hall of IULM University, opening on October 14, 2025.The exhibition The Soul’s Journey: Graciela Iturbide (Il viaggio dell'anima: Graciela Iturbide) will feature 84 photographs, including iconic works such as Mujer ángel and Nuestra Señora de las iguanas, alongside rarer, lesser-known images. The exhibition presents an original journey spanning Mexico (from the deserts of the north to the tropical regions of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec), the United States, Italy, India, Bangladesh, Japan, and Madagascar, in search of the hidden and surprising soul of the everyday. People, animals, plants, stones, and landscapes are bound together by an invisible thread that invites reflection on the silent passing of time, the redefinition of spaces, the relationship between life and death, and the soul that hides within our gaze.

All works are analog, black-and-white photographs, emblematic of Iturbide’s artistic signature. Recognized as one of the greatest contemporary photographers, her works are permanently displayed in major museums such as MoMA in New York, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and have been exhibited at institutions including Tate Gallery in London, the Kyoto Photographic Museum, and Fondation Cartier in Paris. The exhibition is curated by visual anthropologist Sergio Raúl Arroyo, with historical consultancy by Massimo De Giuseppe, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Fashion and Tourism.

The opening ceremony will take place on October 14 at 6:00 PM in the Auditorium of IULM University. On this occasion, Rector Valentina Garavaglia will present the artist with the Seal of IULM University. Just a few days later, Graciela Iturbide will travel to Oviedo to receive the Princesa de Asturias Prize for the Arts 2025 from the King of Spain.

Special thanks go to the Consule General of Mexico in Milan, María de los Ángeles Arriola Aguirre for its collaboration and contribution to the realization of the exhibition.

The exhibition will remain open until November 12, 2025, with the following hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 9:30 AM – 7:00 PM
