Rector Valentina Garavaglia carries the Olympic torch for Milano Cortina Winter Games: “Sport as a flame of knowledge and shared values”
As reported by Corriere della Sera, Rector Valentina Garavaglia’s participation in the Olympic torch relay highlighted the importance of sport within Italian universities.
One of the stages of the Olympic torch relay for the Milano Cortina Winter Games took place yesterday in Mandello del Lario, on the shores of Lake Como. The event featured Valentina Garavaglia, Rector of IULM University, who had the honour of carrying the Olympic torch on behalf not only of her University, but of all Italian universities.
A highly symbolic role that highlighted the deep connection between universities, sport and the holistic education of individuals. “Taking part in this global event as Rector and representative of universities means reflecting on what it means to keep the fire burning within our lecture halls,” Garavaglia said to Corriere della Sera newspaper. “It means nurturing the flame of knowledge and learning as part of a person’s overall development, which cannot be separated from sport.”
According to the Rector, sport should not be seen merely as competition and elite performance, but as a powerful driver of curiosity, community, inclusion and opportunity for all. “Just like in sport, success at university is measured through the strength of relationships, the sharing of values and teamwork aimed at building the future.”
IULM University has long recognised the central role of sport in academic and social life, promoting initiatives that support student wellbeing, inclusion and personal growth. “Italian universities invest in sport more than is often perceived,” Garavaglia added. “They manage sports facilities, support student-athletes and promote a vision of sport that involves self-improvement, overcoming personal limits and dealing with challenges.”
On the road to Milano Cortina 2026, IULM has also actively contributed to the legacy of the Games by producing a video for the Milano Cortina Foundation and by promoting the call for volunteers through its communication channels, strengthening the link between universities, local communities and major international events.
The Rector’s participation as an Olympic torchbearer represents a moment of great pride for IULM University and sends a strong message about the value of sport within higher education, as a tool for education, dialogue and the promotion of a culture of peace.
