17 September 2026 - Event date 29 September 2026

On September 29 at IULM, a presentation on a research project that involved thirteen young people in the rediscovery of Milan’s 8th Municipal District.

How can photography help us see an abandoned space in a new light and imagine its future? This question gave rise to“A Step Away from the Future, the project at the center of the event scheduled for September 29, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., in Room 123.

For a year, thirteen young people participated in workshops and exploratory walks throughout Milan’s 8th Municipal District, accompanied by artists, photographers, and experts in visual arts and cultural design.

After identifying an abandoned space, the participants reconstructed its history, assessed its current condition, and envisioned new possibilities for its transformation. This process led to the creation of thirteen original photography projects.

On September 29, the project will be presented at IULM during a talk with the initiative’s partners and some of the young participants. The event is organized by Prof. Carla Sedini, project coordinator for IULM University and the Center for Research on Culture and the Science of Sustainability.

From September 22 to 29, a video documenting the activities will also be screened on the university’s screens.

The works created are also featured in an exhibition, open from September 15 to October 4 at Connecting Cultures, in the spaces of Fabbrica del Vapore and in an open-air display on billboards along Via Luigi Nono.

“A Step Away from the Future” is a Connecting Cultures project, funded by Fondazione Cariplo and carried out in collaboration with Argòt APS, Fabbrica del Vapore, Spazio Tempo APS, Studio Figure, Kublaiklan, and IULM University, under the patronage of Milan’s 8th City District.
