Erasmus+ KA171: new opportunities for collaboration in the Mediterranean and Gulf countries

Through the KA171 action, supported by EU funds allocated to external policy, the European Commission aims to support and strengthen new collaborative projects between European universities participating in the Erasmus+ Programme and partner higher education institutions in non-EU countries not associated with the Programme.

For the 2024–2027 period, IULM University has been awarded a KA171 project in partnership with three prestigious universities located in Morocco, Algeria and Oman.

The initiative responds to the growing interest in strengthening academic cooperation between Italy, the Mediterranean region and the Gulf area. The project is strongly interdisciplinary in scope, encompassing fields ranging from linguistics and neuroscience to communication and tourism.

Over the three-year period, students and faculty members will take part in joint teaching and research activities, fostering the exchange and integration of different international skills, expertise and perspectives. The initiative represents a further step in the University's internationalisation strategy, creating a concrete opportunity to strengthen scientific and cultural dialogue between Europe and a region of strategic importance and growing economic and educational vitality.

University of Constantine 1, Constantine, Algeria

A long-established multidisciplinary institution founded in 1969, the university specialises primarily in Arabic language and literature, humanities and law.

Al Akhawayn University, Ifrane, Morocco

An internationally oriented, American-style university located in the city of Ifrane, approximately 65 km from Fez. Known for educating Morocco's future leaders, the university offers instruction exclusively in English following the American model, supported by an internationally diverse academic community.

Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman

Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) is one of the three major public universities in Oman. Founded in 1986 in Al-Seeb, it has an admissions system based on academic merit and currently has more than 15,000 students, with a slight female majority. The university has achieved strong positions in both national rankings (1st place) and international rankings (306th in the QS World University Rankings) and is highly active internationally.
