CURRENT POSITION
Stefano Calabrese is Full Professor at the Department of Education and Human Sciences, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, where he teaches Narrative Communication and Narrative Medicine; moreover, he holds the course in Analysis of media texts at the IULM in Milan, and the courses in NeuroHumanities and Multimedia Communication at the Suor Orsola Benincasa in Naples.
RESEARCH LINES
His main research topics are:
• Visual storytelling: the image as an interweaving of inter-semiotic codes; the use of iconic language designed to create narrative intertext, with or without verbal involvement; illustrated books and graphic novels as a great fortune and editorial distribution and the determination of neurocognitive functions aimed at a neuro-aesthetic characterisation of the figurative; sequential drawing.
• Narrative medicine: theories and uses of narration as a support to therapeutic treatments (Narrative Medicine), through the development of expertise in the emotional and cognitive sphere: elaboration of experimental hypotheses on the benefit of the act of narration, with regard to suffering emotional states and interrupted or delayed cognitive processes of people with difficulties, traumas or pathologies.
• Neuronarratology: the effects of fiction (novels, films, TV serials) at a neurocognitive level in terms of increased empathy, diversification of neurochemical transmitters, consolidation of the Self, improvement of mind reading and problem solving skills.
• Intercultural narratology: the relationship between biological evolution, culture and narratology, the connection between geographic, cultural area and storytelling, the differences between dissimilar narrative modalities in the form of life narratives, novels, autobiographies, which emerge according to the geographical, cultural and social context.
• Narrative morphologies of globalization: main features of the global novel; the new phenomena of translation, serialization, remediation; the unprecedented fragmentation of the text in various media of transmedia storytelling; the use of magical realism as an anthropological and cognitive model of domestication of reality; the new conversion of the reader to an active role and the fandom, which is capable, through social networks, of influencing the most successful storytelling plots.
• Neurorhetoric: the role of rhetoric in the humanities and in advertising in recent decades and the systematic foundations of neurorhetoric.
