Tim Parks

Born in Manchester, United Kingdom, in 1954, Parks grew up in London and graduated in English Language and Literature from the University of Cambridge.

He continued his studies in the United States where he received a Master's degree in American Literature and Film from Harvard University, after which he left university to pursue a career as a novelist, publishing his first novel in 1985.
He moved to Italy in 1981 and worked as a language teacher and then as a commercial translator, returning to the University of Verona in 1985 as a lecturer in English.

His first literary translations date back to 1986: he has translated, among others, works by Machiavelli, Leopardi, Moravia, Tabucchi, Calvino and Calasso. In 1991 he began teaching at IULM University, devoting himself to the problem of literary translation. From this course emerged the book Translating Style, (published in Italy under the title Translate English).

In 1998 he became a researcher with an assignment (Translation from Italian into English), and in 2005 he was appointed as an associate professor.

In the meantime he has continued to publish both novels and essays, especially, but not only, on literature and translation and often on the pages of the New York Review of Books and the London Review of Books. In 2011 he curated the exhibition Denaro e Bellezza, I banchieri, Botticelli e il rogo delle vanità at Palazzo Strozzi, Florence.
