CURRENT POSITION:
Associate Professor of Nordic languages and Literatures, with lengthy experience as a teacher of ancient Germanic languages and cultures (Gothic, Old English, Old Saxon, Old High German, Old Norse). At the moment, he teaches Scandinavian culture-history and Danish language and History of the German language.
RESEARCH LINES:
He published the first Italian translation of an Old Danish law book, with explanations and commentary. In 2013, he wrote an essay about Anglo-Saxon legal history.
He has written several scientific articles on some of the thorniest subjects of historical Germanic linguistics, such as the Nordic reduction of flexional endings, conservative traits in the Danish language, the origin of Gothic genitive plural ending -ē, the original features of the Germanic weak verbs of the 3rd class, the development of Germanic /ē 1 / in unstressed syllable in North Germanic, a new theory about the origin of Old High German primary Umlaut, a new theory about the origin of the Danish glottal stop. His strong interest in diachronic Linguistics has led him to sketch out a new hypothesis on the original structure of the Proto-Indo-European verb system (2014). He has published the first scientific handbook on Danish phonology for Italian readers (2012) and the first exhaustive Danish grammar for Italian students (2013). In the field of Nordic philology he has written, as co-writer, the first volume of the first ever handbook on medieval Scandinavian languages and literature for Italian scholars (2018).
Moreover, for many years, he has devoted himself to the study and support of the endangered German dialect, called “Cimbro”, spoken in northeastern Italy. In connection with this, he has been appointed by local institutions to plan and direct several projects, which have led to the creation of a lexical database, the publishing of grammars and dictionaries of the local language. He has also written articles and essays on the history of this threatened language.
