CURRENT POSITION

Associate Professor of Nordic languages and Literatures, with lengthy experience as a teacher of ancient Germanic languages and cultures (Gothic, Old English, Old Saxon, Old High German, Old Norse). At the moment, he teaches Scandinavian culture-history and Danish language and History of the German language.

RESEARCH LINES

He has published the first Italian translation of a medieval  Danish legal code, with explanations and comments. In 2013 he wrote an essay on the history of Anglo-Saxon law.

He has written several scientific articles on some of the most thorny issues of Germanic historical linguistics, such as e.g. the inflectional reduction in the Nordic languages, the conservatism of the Danish language, the origin of the Gothic plural genitive in -ē, the original morphological features of the Germanic weak verbs of the III class, the development of germ. /ē1/ in unstressed syllable in North Germanic, a new theory on the origin of the Old High German primary umlaut, a new theory on the origin of the Danish glottal stop. His strong interest in diachronic linguistics led him to sketch a new hypothesis on the original structure of the Proto-Indo-European verbal system (2014). He published the first scientific textbook in Italian on Danish phonology (2012) and the first exhaustive Danish grammar in Italian (2013). In the field of Nordic philology he wrote, as co-author, the first volume of the first manual in Italian on medieval Scandinavian languages and literature (2018). Recently published is his handbook of phonology of the ancient Germanic languages (2021).

Furthermore, for many years, he has dedicated himself to the study and support of the endangered Germanic minority language called "Cimbro", spoken in Veneto and Trentino. In relation to this he was repeatedly commissioned by local institutions to plan and direct various projects, which led to the creation of a lexical database and the publication of grammars and dictionaries of the local language. He has also written articles and essays on the history of this endangered language
