CURRENT POSITION
Fixed-term researcher in Tenure Track (RTT) at the Faculty of Interpreting and Translation.
Prior to joining IULM, he worked at the Universities of Bologna (Forlì campus) and UNINT in Italy, as well as the Universities of Salford, Manchester, and Bath in the UK. He also has extensive experience as a freelance translator and interpreter.
After his BA (Hons) in Translation and Liaison Interpreting and Masters degree in Conference Interpreting at the University of Trieste (Italy), he received his PhD in Interpreting from the University of Salford (Greater Manchester) in 2014. In the UK, he also obtained the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (English Law Option) to work for the UK National Register of Public Service Interpreters, and the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PgCAP) to become member of the UK Higher Education Academy.
He has taken part in various national research projects and is a member of International Pragmatics Association (IPrA), Associazione Italiana di Linguistica Applicata (AITLA) and AIA (Associazione Italiana di Anglistica). He was awarded the National Scientific Qualification for Associate professorship in sector 10/L1 (English and Anglo-American Languages, Literatures and Cultures) in November 2024.
LINES OF RESEARCH
Dr Gallai’s main research interests are twofold: the analysis of various topics within the field of cognitive pragmatics and legal and humanitarian interpreting (Interpreting Studies), with a focus on the treatment of procedural elements and interpreters’ professional ethics. His work approaches phenomena from a relevance-theoretic (Sperber and Wilson, 1986/1995) and sociolinguistic perspective, which leads to the creation and analysis of corpora. In addition, he looks into language teaching methods and specialised languages (in particular, legal language), especially from and applied, cross-linguistic and interdisciplinary perspective.
He has published a volume on "Relevance Theory: A Cognitive-Pragmatic Approach to Translation and Interpreting" (Routledge, 2022), which provides an overview of the cognitive approach to communication adopted by Relevance Theory and explores its various applications (and future implications) within Translation and Interpretation studies. He has also presented papers at national and international conferences, and authored articles on pragmatics and practices and policies in the field of interpreting.
