Activities
2022 onwards
Since 2022, as part of the Department of Communication, Arts, and Media’s project, research on periodicals has continued, with a particular focus on the emergence and establishment of the illustrated magazine format. In Italy, this format began to spread from the late 1930s, during the Fascist era. Popular illustrated magazines are being analyzed, especially from the perspective of the relationship between text and image, in the unique interplay that arises between layout, articles, captions, and photographs. On November 22, 2022, a conference on this topic took place. In 2023, the research focus has shifted to the immediate post-war period and the years of reconstruction. On Thursday, November 29, and Friday, December 1, a conference on illustrated periodicals in the post-war era will be held.
2018-2022
The research group developed a research project that focuses on the form of book review in periodicals. This project has given rise to a conference dedicated to reviewing practices (May 2019), a volume edited by Andrea Chiurato titled Leggere per scegliere. La pratica della recensione nell'editoria moderna e contemporanea, and the first international conference on the review form, held online from June 3rd to June 5th, 2020.
2016-2018
The first research project on periodicals led to the international conference of the ESPRit association titled Conflict in the Periodical Press (held in June 2017 at IULM University), the publication of a special issue of JEPS (“Journal of European Periodical Studies”), edited by Paolo Giovannetti, Andrea Chiurato, and Mara Logaldo, and the book Periodici del Novecento e del Duemila fra avanguardie e postmoderno, edited by Giovannetti and published in 2018.
