About IULM
IULM — Libera Università di Lingue e Comunicazione — is Italy’s leading university dedicated to languages, communication, and the cultural and creative industries. It was founded in 1968 by the Fondazione Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori as a University Institute of Modern Languages (hence its name I.U.L.M.), underscoring from the outset its strong identity as a university rooted in linguistic education and intercultural communication.
Over the decades, IULM has grown into a centre of excellence combining advanced language studies, communication, media, interpreting, translation, tourism, the arts, and new digital professions. Its mission brings together knowledge, critical awareness, and hands‑on expertise, preparing future‑ready graduates for an increasingly interconnected global landscape.
Guided by the conviction that linguistic competence and cultural preparation must go hand in hand with professional skills, IULM offers programmes that blend solid academic foundations with experiential learning closely connected to real‑world practice. Students develop advanced linguistic, communicative, intercultural, and technological abilities across various sectors—from corporate communication and public relations to media, cultural events, tourism, and the creative industries. This educational model also emphasises transversal skills such as teamwork, decision‑making, and effective communication, which are increasingly sought after in today’s labour market.
Alongside its teaching mission, research plays a central role at IULM, contributing to innovation in the fields of languages, communication, media studies, cultural heritage, and the creative industries. Research centres, laboratories, and interdisciplinary teams foster projects that combine theoretical inquiry with applied experimentation, strengthening IULM’s contribution to national and international academic discourse.
Over more than five decades, the University has consolidated its reputation thanks to a strong network of collaborations with businesses, cultural institutions, media organisations, and international partners. This ecosystem supports internships, applied research, and professional engagement, ensuring that students benefit from concrete work opportunities and industry‑aligned learning experiences. The University’s commitment to innovation is reflected in its state‑of‑the‑art campus and specialised facilities, including laboratories dedicated to journalism, film and television production, multimedia content creation, and simultaneous interpreting.
The University is strongly committed to promoting sustainability, inclusion, and social responsibility, aligning its strategic vision with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These commitments have earned IULM recognition in major international rankings, confirming its role as a forward‑looking institution shaping the next generation of communicators, linguists, and cultural innovators.
Today, IULM stands as a major reference point in Italy and beyond for education and research in languages, communication, and the cultural and creative sectors.
