Open Rehearsal Invitation: Tiresias Never Made It to New York
We are pleased to invite you to a special open rehearsal of Tiresias Never Made It to New York, an innovative multilingual theatre co‑production that brings together three collaborating companies: Pacta.dei Teatri, Milan; Multicultural City, Berlin; Au Chapeau Rouge, Avignon. In this experimental format, one company performs live on stage while the other two join in real time via streaming, creating a single, shared performance space that transcends physical boundaries.
Rooted in the polyphonic richness of its source text, the project preserves the layered voices that inspire the piece. At the same time, its multilingual dimension is made fully accessible through live surtitling produced by students of the MA Programme in Translation & Interpreting Studies, offering audiences an immediate and inclusive experience of the work.
The event is part of the European co‑funded Creative Europe project Tra‑NET – (Trans)National European Theatre: audiovisual tools and simultaneous interpreting for the internationalisation of theatre production and consumption (P.I. Université d’Avignon), of which IULM is the partner in charge of all activities related to translation and interpreting.
During the first edition of the festival Clashing Classics in 2025, IULM students were involved in training sessions, surtitling masterclasses, interpreting in the live debates among the three audiences, and the creation of the surtitles themselves, translated from/into four different languages (Italian, French, German, and English) for works by Fassbinder, Pirandello, and Marivaux (adaptation by Catherine Clive, a British actress of the 18th century).
The open rehearsal will take place at IULM – Sala dei 146, on 20 May at 18:30. This free event is open to all conference participants, offering a unique opportunity to witness the creative process behind a pioneering European theatrical collaboration.
We look forward to welcoming you to this exceptional intercultural and intermedial performance moment.
About the Project
At the heart of Tra‑NET’s transnational theatre vision is a unique multilingual co‑production developed collaboratively by three European partner theatres in Avignon, Milan, and Berlin. This joint creation forms part of the project’s two‑year international festival, which connects audiences across borders through simultaneous live performances, multilingual surtitling, and shared post‑show discussions.
The 2026 co‑production draws inspiration from T. S. Eliot’s The Waste Land, with each theatre contributing its own artistic interpretation of this modernist European masterpiece. By weaving together multiple languages, performance styles, and cultural perspectives, the production embodies Tra‑NET’s core mission: to rethink how theatre is created, experienced, and shared across Europe.
Through this collaborative work, Tra‑NET showcases how technology, multilingualism, and artistic exchange can converge to form a truly European theatrical experience—one that transcends national boundaries and brings diverse audiences into a single, interconnected cultural space.
