A musicologist and passionate divulger, Gaia Varon combines her commitment as a scholar and teacher with her work as an author and presenter in radio and television. After studying music at the Conservatory of Music G. Verdi and the Civic School of Music in Milan, she graduated from the Alma Mater University in Bologna (thesis Orchestration and Dramaturgy in Verdi) where she subsequently obtained her PhD in Musicology and Musical Heritage (thesis Technique, style and ideology in symphonic music in video: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony), refining her research with a period at the University of Cambridge. The relationship between classical music and the media is at the heart of her research. She is completing a forthcoming book on the television productions of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. She has published articles and book chapters on this subject, on video work, on the style and technique of audiovisual filming, on classical music on Italian radio and on music in German avant-garde short films. Winner of the International Rotary Club Award "Giuseppe Verdi" 2011 (National Institute of Verdi Studies of Parma), she is preparing a book on the instrumental component in Verdi's operas. She is a member of the study group WAV - Worlds of Audiovision conducted by Gianmario Borio and Elena Mosconi at the Faculty of Musicology of the University of Pavia - Cremona. Since 2001, she has been teaching or has taught, as a contract professor, at various institutions, including the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan-Brescia, IULM University, the Conservatory G. Verdi in Milan, the Conservatory Guido Cantelli in Novara. She has also taught occasional courses and masters, including the Telematic Master in Writing and Directing for television and new media in collaboration with the University of Turin, of which she designed and coordinated the writing section. In addition to her research and teaching activities, she also works as a journalist, author and presenter on radio and television. She currently collaborates as an author and radio host with the Rete due of the Radio della Svizzera Italiana and with Rai Radio3, for which she is a correspondent from the Teatro alla Scala in Milan and other Italian theatres. For Radio3 she has conducted several programs including, for twelve years, Piazzaverdi. She currently works as an author and presenter with the Sky Classica channel. She has designed and conducted programs for RaiSat, Classica/Arte, Telepiù Classica, including the series In Search of Beethoven, the second episode of which won the special prize at the Prague Festival in 1997. Journalist, she collaborates or has collaborated with newspapers and various newspapers, both specialist and non-specialist.
