Degree in Classical Literature with an Archaeological Degree from the University of Catania (110/110), Specialization in Classical Archaeology from the University of Lecce (70/70), PhD (PhD) in Archaeology from the University of Bristol (UK), Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Arts, with a scholarship from the British Academy of London. From 2002-2003 to 2010-2011, she was Adjunct Professor of "Urbanism of the Ancient World" (L-ANT 09), Degree Course in Science of Cultural Heritage, Faculty of Letters and Philosophy, University of Catania.
Since 2014 she has been qualified as Ordinary Professor of Archaeology, with ASN of MIUR.
She carries out scientific research in the field of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage, the protection and promotion of cultural heritage. Particular attention is paid to the protection and promotion of cultural heritage, including underwater heritage, to issues related to the archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean. She works with interdisciplinary teams from prestigious research institutions, including the Honor Frost Foundation in London, ENEA in Rome, the Research School of Earth Science in Canberra (Australia), the Institut National des Sciences de l'Archéologie et du Patrimoine (INSAP), UNESCO, and various Italian and foreign universities.
She is a member of the scientific commission CUNES UNESCO Sicily, already a member of the working group initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the definition and ratification of the 'UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage'. In the roles of the Region of Sicily since 2005, serving at the U.O. "Archaeological Heritage" of the Superintendence BB.CC.AA. of Syracuse, she has developed specific skills in the activities of protection, promotion and cultural cooperation at national and international level, organizing conferences, exhibitions, technical tables and working in concert with the Nucleus for the Protection of the Artistic Heritage of the Carabinieri and / or other police bodies for the protection of the territory.
In terms of communication, she publishes in international journals, is invited to present her work at conferences (British Museum, IIC London, IIC Istanbul, British School at Rome, Europa House in London), conferences and seminars, she is a consultant to BBC Science in London and Wild Dreams Films for the production of documentaries of Archaeology. She has a consolidated experience with roles of responsibility in relations with institutional bodies, national and international, responsible for research, protection and enhancement of heritage and culture.
As Vice-President of the University Woman Of Europe (2014-2017), she promoted international cooperation, peace and respect for human rights with particular attention to gender difference, social integration and cultural promotion. Within the framework of the UWE action "Quality Education for all in Europe", she was invited to present to the Minister of Education the project "Culturale Heritage, History of Art and foreign languages as key-factors in intercultural Education to ensuring quality school process", and to present a conference on the subject at the Europa House in London (2014) together with a workshop at the Italian Institute of Culture in London.
More recently, she collaborated with the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology in Oxford (UK) for the exhibition "Storms, war and shipwrecks: 60 years of maritime archaeology around Sicily" (21 June - 24 September 2016), as part of whose scientific activity of promotion and dissemination, she also gave several conferences including the Special Talk with which the exhibition ended.
Her scientific production - more than 40 publications, including essays and volumes - is published in journals of international scientific importance. The volume "The Aeolian Islands: crossroads of Mediterranean maritime routes. A survey on their maritime archaeology and topography from the Prehistoric to the Roman periods", published in Oxford in the series British Archaeological Reports (2003), is now in its third edition.
She has carried out excavation and research activities (including Haghia Triada, Albintimilium, Lavinium, Ognina, Valle dell'Himera, Mauretania Tingitana), also in the submarine field (including: Aeolian Islands, South-Eastern Sicily, Giardini-Naxos, Camarina, Syracuse, Turkey), has gained teaching experience both in Italy (University of Catania) and abroad (University of Bristol, UK; Roger William's Univeristy, Rhode Island, USA).
She has taken part in national and international research projects with commitments of responsibility (University of Catania, University of Bristol, DGPCC of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) coordinating and directing interdisciplinary work teams (as the only reference archaeologist for Italy: University of Catania, four-year European Project COST).
For more than a decade, she has worked in roles of the Sicily Region, as a public competition winner in the qualification of Technical Director of Archaeology, serving as an Archaeologist Executive Officer at the Archaeological Heritage Service of the Superintendence BB.CC.AA. of Syracuse.
