Jarkko Saarinen is a Full Professor of Human Geography at the University of Oulu, Finland, and Distinguished Visiting Professor (Sustainability Management) at the University of Johannesburg (South Africa) and Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria (South Africa). He is Editor for the Tourism Geographies journal and Associate Editor for the Annals of Tourism Research and Journal of Ecotourism. He has a broad national and international. He is the Chair of the International Geographical Union's (IGU) National Committee (Finland), and over the period 2006-2012 he was the Chairperson of the IGU's Commission on the Geography of Tourism, Leisure and Global Change. In 2012-16 he was a Vice-President of IGU. Since 2013 he has been a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. In 2013 he received the Association of American Geographer's (AAG) Roy Wolfe Award for outstanding academic contributions to the discipline and the Geographical Society of Finland's Ragnal Hult Medal for the contributions to the geographical research and knowledge. He received the AAG's John Rooney Award in 2020 for outstanding applied contributions to the discipline of tourism geography. He has written over 160 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and been a co-author/editor of several international books, including the recent titles of: Tourism, Change and the Global South (Routledge, 2021), Tourism enclaves: Geographies of exclusive spaces in tourism (Routledge, 2021), Tourism and sustainable development goals (Routledge, 2020), Resilient Destinations in Tourism (2019, Routledge) and Borderless Worlds for Whom? (2019, Routledge).
RESEARCH LINES:
Professor Saarinen's research interests include tourism and development, sustainable development, sustainability and responsibility in tourism, tourism and climate change adaptation, tourism-community relations, community-based natural resource management and wilderness and nature conservation studies. Over the past 20 years he has been working extensively in the rural and peripheral areas of southern Africa and northern (Arctic) Finland.
